Posted Oct 21, 2008

The 2008 Championship battle came down to the last 2 rounds of the season at Knockhill. Covey had a 13 point lead and just had to finish ahead of Thirlwall in race 1. Covey qualified well in 2nd whilst Thirlwall struggled with traffic on his final lap and could only manage 7th (his worst qualifying session of the season). Knox bagged pole and Dryden and Crocker made up row 2, Row 3 was Milton and Rowan.

Race 1:

Knox made a good get away and Covey slotted into 2nd, Crocker made it passed Dryden who had Milton hot on his heels. Thirlwall made it passed Rowan and set about harrassing Milton. Crocker made a move on Covey but couldn't quite keep ahead. Covey then set about trying to pass Knox for the lead. Thirlwall overtook Milton after Milton ran wide at the hairpin. It started to rain which caught a few drivers out with big sideways moments for most. Covey really pressured Knox but Knox held on for the win with covey 2nd and Crocker picking up the last podium spot. Dryden finished 4th with Thirlwall in 5th and Rowan in 6th. Covey picked up the bonus point for fastest lap. This result had clinched the Championship for Covey who was simply over the moon.

Race 2:

The reverse grid lottery was drawn and it put Kenneth Thirlwall on pole with Dryden alongside him on the front row, 2nd row was Crocker and Covey and 3rd row Knox and Rowan. Dryden got the jump at the lights and led into the first corner. Thirlwall held off Crocker until lap 2 when Crocker got passed at the Hairpin. Dryden was edging away but the conditions were attrocious and he made a mistake through Clarks which allowed Crocker and Knox to catch up. Crocker made a big dive up the inside of the hairpin on Dryden but got a slow exit and Dryden was able to repass going up the straight. Knox had better exit speed than both but had nowhere to go other than the abitious move round the outside of Duffes. Dryden was hit from behind in the braking zone for Duffes and was sent flying into Knox. They both spun down Duffes and Dryden collected Crocker's passenger side mid spin which retired Dryden but Crocker managed to keep going. Knox's car continued spinning until he bogged down near the tyre wall, he also could not rejoin. Crocker only made a couple more laps before he also had to retire from a great battle he was having with Covey and Thirlwall. Covey who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time this season finished on a high with a win with Thirlwall 2nd and Milton picking up 3rd and due to Dryden's demise he also secured 4th in the Championship.
